Wasp control

Wasps are one of Britains most feared and potentially aggressive insects, possessing a painful sting which can be life threatening for some. However, not all wasps are aggressive and most are beneficial in gardens, as they feed their grubs on caterpillars and other insects, thereby reducing these garden pest populations.

Suddenstrike Pest Control are here to help, we are your local, friendly, professional pest control providers, with British Pest Control Association (BPCA) certified technicians, ready to assist you, with a range of treatments available, including non-chemical measures and environmentally friendly solutions.

Why control wasps?

Most of the time, wasps are a nuisance and generally don’t sting unless they feel threatened; however, they can sting multiple times and wasp stings are at best painful, but at worst can cause anaphylaxis, a sever and potentially life-threatening allergic reaction.

Wasps will build their nests in sheltered spots, but commonly these are in loft spaces, under the eaves of buildings, in wall cavities, in sheds or garages, even extractor fan pipes. Wasps nests can more naturally be found in trees, bushes and the ground. Where the nests come in to contact with humans, they become a nuisance and the risk of wasp stings increases.

Wasp behaviour

In the spring time, queen wasps will emerge out of hibernation and start to construct a new nest, which at this point is typically between the size of a golf ball and a tennis ball. By the summer time, the wasps nest is at its reaching its peak, with thousands of adult wasps feeding wasp larvae in the nest and building the nest structure, with up to 300 eggs being produced by the queen each day. With one nest producing between 3,000 and 8,000 wasps in a year!

Wasps nests will peak during the late summer and early autumn and start to search out for sweet foods, this is the point that they commonly become a nuisance. As autumn moves in and gives way to winter, the adult wasps start to die off and the new queens go in to hibernation, ready to emerge in the spring to start the process over again, with the construction of a new nest – a wasps nest will only last for one year and will completely die off at the end of that year.

Wasps and Hornets

If you suspect that you have a wasp or hornet nest at your property and would like it treating, we offer safe and effective wasps nest treatments from BPCA certified technicians. It is best to treat a nest earlier in the year, before numbers increase and the insects become more aggressive.

Common Wasp (Vespula vulgaris)

Slightly smaller than the German Wasp, both species are virtually identical with the only notable difference being the markings on their faces and thoraxes with Common wasps having a black anchor shape marking. Both species also possess a very painful and potentially life threatening sting.

Asian Hornet (Vespa velutina)

Black or dark brown, key features features are a distinct yellow band at the rear, a fine, bright yellow ‘belt’ at the waist and a black head with orange or yellow face. Asian Hornets have been in Britain since 2016 and are an invasive predatory species that could have a devastating impact on British wildlife as Asian Hornets will eat Honey Bees amongst other insects. If an Asian Hornet is discovered, it should be reported to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) immediately, by emailing alertnonnative@ceh.ac.uk
