How did I get Bedbugs?

As mentioned above, it is surprisingly common for a Bedbug infestation to occur, as they can be carried in to the property with day to day items or on new/second hand furniture.

What are the signs of infestation?

Bedbugs are found wherever humans sleep within a property. They are nocturnal and spend most of their time hiding in areas such as floor cracks, under carpets, behind loose wallpaper, behind pictures, loose skirting boards and door frames. They are more commonly found in the seams, piping and buttons of bed mattresses and on bedroom furniture.

Aside from sightings, evidence of the presence of bed bugs includes –

  • Bites, typically red and irritated, often found in rows on your neck, shoulders, back, legs or arms.
  • Small reddish-brown spots (faecal marks) on bed linen and frames are the most common signs of an infestation.
  • Bedbug skin moults, pale-white eggs and empty egg shells (these are small but still visible to the human eye).

Why control Bedbugs?

Bedbugs are a parasite and as such the biggest issue from their presence is their bites from feeding, which although they aren’t painful in most instances, they can result in a rash or itch. Additionally, due to their feeding habits, bedbugs can harbour various pathogens that may be harmful to humans.

Bedbugs also cause mental distress and harm.

If left untreated, bedbug infestations can quickly get out of control.

Bedbugs are most likely to affect hospitality businesses such as hotels, hostels and B&B’s, however, they may also affect business such as office buildings. In these instances, the presence of bedbugs can ruin a companies reputation as well as proving costly if having to replace furniture, bedding and towels etc…
