Black Garden Ants are the most common ‘pest’ ant species encountered in the UK (other less common pest ants include Pharaoh’s Ant and Ghost Ants). Although they are not considered a pest with a significant risk to public health, they are a nuisance and will contaminate food stuffs.

Why control Ants?

Although, the Black Garden Ant is not regarded as posing a significant risk to public health, they are a nuisance and will contaminate food stuffs, travelling large distances searching for sweet, sugary food stuffs, leaving a pheromone trail for others to follow.

Black Garden ants as the name suggests are commonly found outside in gardens; however, they can find the smallest of cracks in buildings leading them into the building to feed. Occasionally Black Garden Ant nests can be found inside properties, these are typically identified from small piles of soil or ‘sandy’ material at the bases of walls. Over a few days in July or August, winged Ants or flying ants appear in large numbers.

Simple steps that you can take to discourage Ants include making sure you keep worktops and surfaces clean and free of food, with any food left out covered up, making sure all contents of cupboards are sealed, especially sweet, sugary foods.

• The worker Ants (those commonly seen) are 4-5mm long, with Queens reaching 15mm long.
• Dark brown in colour.
• No sting.
• Predominantly found living in soil.
• Sweet foods are preferred, but high protein foods will be taken.
