How to bird proof a crane?

It’s fair to say that it is not every day where you are asked to bird proof a 40ft high crane alongside a major river, however that is exactly what Suddenstrike were asked to do by BAM Nuttall as part of a regeneration project to the docks at Rochester, Kent.

The crane in question was at 40ft tall dock crane, used to load and unload cargo from barges transporting goods along the river Medway and further. Suddenstrike’s Managing Director, Steve Wilkinson, often says that “in this industry no two jobs are ever the same” and this certainly rings true on this occasion.

Before proofing of the cabin could begin, all bird guano had to be removed and the area sanitised to minimise the threat caused by bacteria in the droppings to staff and other contractors on site. Once this had taken place, (and after a short break due to a site evacuation after an un-detonated World War 2 bomb was dredged up in the river itself) the windows and doors then had to be proofed using polypropylene netting to prevent birds from gaining further access before the crane was dismantled at a later date.
